Two separate Calgary internet outages in the same week. Both caused by the same thing: thieves cutting cables to steal copper. On August 10, 2026, an attempted copper theft around 3 a.m. severed fibre lines and knocked out internet, TV, and home phone service for Rogers customers across southeast and southwest Calgary (CBC News, August 2026). Days later, hundreds of Telus customers in Ogden, Kingsland, Bowness, and Dalhousie were still offline from a separate rash of thefts, with some households hitting day 11 without service (Global News, August 2026).
If you run a business, the uncomfortable part is this: it did not matter that these customers were in the middle of a major Canadian city, minutes from carrier depots and repair crews. Physical damage to buried and aerial cable takes days to fix, not hours. And when your only connection is that one physical line, your phones, payments, and cloud apps go down with it.

In the early hours of Monday, August 10, thieves cut Rogers fibre lines while trying to steal copper wire. The damage took out home phone, internet, and TV service across parts of southeast and southwest Calgary. Rogers had six crews and more than 20 technicians on site, and full restoration still ran into the next morning (CBC News, August 2026).
The Telus situation has been worse. A series of thefts left hundreds of Calgarians in Ogden, Kingsland, Bowness, and Dalhousie without cable, internet, or phone service, roughly 1,600 customers as of August 15. One Dalhousie couple reported 11 days offline with no restoration date, and their first question was the one every business owner should be asking: their neighbours work from home, so what are they supposed to do (Global News, August 2026)?
Neither of these was a freak event. Telus reports copper thefts doubled in 2026 compared to the year before, a 102 per cent increase. Rogers says repair hours tied to vandalism have climbed more than 400 per cent since 2022, and that theft-related repairs take three to four times longer than typical outages because of the extent of the damage. Both carriers are pushing for tougher penalties, and the federal government's Bill C-14 aims to crack down on copper theft. Calgary police have also noted these cuts can affect emergency communications and hospitals, not just Netflix.
💡 Here is the frustrating irony: thieves are usually after copper, which has little value left in modern networks. But copper and fibre run through the same conduits and poles, so a botched copper theft slices the fibre beside it. Your gigabit fibre connection is only as safe as the cheapest cable next to it.
Most business owners assume redundancy is a rural problem. The thinking goes: we are downtown, the infrastructure is everywhere, outages get fixed fast. The last two years in Calgary have disproven all three assumptions.
The invoice for an outage never says "internet outage" on it. It shows up as everything else breaking at once. When the line goes down, so does most of what your team touches all day:

Internet failover is a second connection that takes over automatically when your primary line fails. For most Calgary offices, the practical second connection is cellular: a business-grade router (or an add-on to your existing firewall) with a 5G or LTE modem and a data SIM inside.
Think of it like the spare tire in your trunk. You do not drive on it every day, and it is not meant to be as fast as your regular tires, but when you get a flat you keep moving instead of waiting hours on the shoulder for a tow.
The whole point of a backup is that it fails differently than the primary. A cellular connection reaches your office through the air from a tower, so a cut cable in a conduit six blocks away does not touch it. During this month's outages, mobile networks in the affected neighbourhoods kept working while the wired lines were down. That physical separation is exactly what you are buying.
✅ One detail that matters: pick a cellular carrier different from your wired provider where possible. Carrier diversity means a problem on one company's network is far less likely to take out both of your connections at once.
If you have a laptop and a smartphone, you already have an emergency option. Nearly every phone can share its cellular data as a Wi-Fi hotspot or over a USB cable, and for one person answering email during a short outage, it genuinely works. If an outage catches you without a failover setup, use it. It is much better than nothing.
But it is a personal workaround, not a business continuity plan. Here is where it falls short:

For most small offices, yes. Modern 5G (and even LTE) comfortably handles email, cloud apps, VoIP calls, and payment processing. Large file transfers and video-heavy work will feel slower than fibre. Remember the spare tire: the goal is staying operational, not matching your gigabit line.
Hardware is typically a few hundred to around a thousand dollars one-time, plus a modest monthly data plan. Compare that with one day of a five-person team unable to work, or a retail counter that cannot take payments over a long weekend. Most businesses recover the cost in the first outage.
This month answered that. The August outages hit established Calgary neighbourhoods on modern infrastructure, and repairs still took days. Fibre is fantastic as a primary connection. It is still one physical cable.
Sometimes, and for larger offices a second wired line plus cellular is a strong combination. The catch is that competing providers often share the same poles and conduits, so one backhoe or one copper thief can cut both. Cellular fails differently, which is what makes it a true backup.
