What Happened in Calgary This Month

In the early hours of Monday, August 10, thieves cut Rogers fibre lines while trying to steal copper wire. The damage took out home phone, internet, and TV service across parts of southeast and southwest Calgary. Rogers had six crews and more than 20 technicians on site, and full restoration still ran into the next morning (CBC News, August 2026).

The Telus situation has been worse. A series of thefts left hundreds of Calgarians in Ogden, Kingsland, Bowness, and Dalhousie without cable, internet, or phone service, roughly 1,600 customers as of August 15. One Dalhousie couple reported 11 days offline with no restoration date, and their first question was the one every business owner should be asking: their neighbours work from home, so what are they supposed to do (Global News, August 2026)?

Neither of these was a freak event. Telus reports copper thefts doubled in 2026 compared to the year before, a 102 per cent increase. Rogers says repair hours tied to vandalism have climbed more than 400 per cent since 2022, and that theft-related repairs take three to four times longer than typical outages because of the extent of the damage. Both carriers are pushing for tougher penalties, and the federal government's Bill C-14 aims to crack down on copper theft. Calgary police have also noted these cuts can affect emergency communications and hospitals, not just Netflix.

Why Big-City Internet Is Not as Safe as It Looks

Most business owners assume redundancy is a rural problem. The thinking goes: we are downtown, the infrastructure is everywhere, outages get fixed fast. The last two years in Calgary have disproven all three assumptions.

  • One building, one physical path. Even if your provider has a redundant core network, the cable into your building is almost always a single line through a single conduit. Cut it anywhere along the route and you are dark.

What a Day Offline Actually Costs a Small Business

The invoice for an outage never says "internet outage" on it. It shows up as everything else breaking at once. When the line goes down, so does most of what your team touches all day:

  • Phones. Most business phone systems now run over the internet (VoIP). No internet means no inbound calls, and callers hear dead air, not a busy signal. They call your competitor next.
  • Payments. Debit and credit terminals need a connection. A retail counter or clinic front desk that cannot process payments is effectively closed.

The Stopgap: Using Your Phone as a Hotspot

If you have a laptop and a smartphone, you already have an emergency option. Nearly every phone can share its cellular data as a Wi-Fi hotspot or over a USB cable, and for one person answering email during a short outage, it genuinely works. If an outage catches you without a failover setup, use it. It is much better than nothing.

But it is a personal workaround, not a business continuity plan. Here is where it falls short:

  • It only saves the laptops. Your desk phones, payment terminals, printers, security cameras, and any on-site server are wired to the office network. A hotspot does nothing for them, and those are usually the things that stop revenue.
  • Data caps and throttling. Most Canadian mobile plans cap hotspot data or slow it sharply after a threshold. A team working on video calls can burn through a plan's hotspot allowance in a day or two, and an 11-day outage will blow past any personal plan.

  • Security and management gaps. Traffic through a personal hotspot bypasses your office firewall, content filtering, and monitoring. Some VPNs and banking or accounting platforms also react badly to the changing addresses that come with cellular hotspots, forcing repeated logins.
  • Nobody is on the phones. While staff are tethered to laptops, your main business line is still down if it runs on VoIP. Customers are getting silence.
